Whenever people bring home an idol of Lord Ganesha, a common question arises – which side should Lord Ganesha’s trunk bend? The position of the trunk holds special significance in worship. Let’s understand:
Right-Sided Trunk (Dakshinabhimukhi Ganesha)
If the trunk bends towards the right, the idol is called Dakshin Murti or Dakshinabhimukhi Murti.
“Dakshin” means South or right side. The south direction is linked with Yamalok, while the right side represents the Surya Nadi (Sun channel), which is full of energy and power.
Because of these associations, right-trunk Ganesha is considered ‘Jagrut’ (awakened).
Such idols must be worshipped strictly according to rituals. If worship is performed with devotion and proper methods, it increases sattva (purity) and protects devotees from negative vibrations.
However, if the rituals are not followed correctly, it is believed that Lord Ganesha in this form may become displeased.
Left-Sided Trunk (Vaammukhi Ganesha)
If the trunk bends towards the left, the idol is called Vaammukhi Ganesha.
“Vaam” means left or north direction. The north is connected to spirituality, positivity, and peace. The left side is linked to the Chandra Nadi (Moon channel), which represents calmness and coolness.
For this reason, idols with the trunk bent to the left are most commonly worshipped in homes.
