Phagwara: Twenty cows were found dead in mysterious circumstances, and 28 others were seen struggling for life in Shri Krishan Gaushala at Mehli Gate Phagwara on Monday.

Several Hindu leaders including Shiv Sena’s Inderjit Karwal, Kamal Saroj, and Rajesh Palta, besides others, rushed to the Gaushala and alleged that some miscreants had purposely given some poisonous eatable substance to the cows, due to which the cows have succumbed to death on Sunday night.

Joginder Singh Maan, MP Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal, Phagwara MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, AAP Spokesperson Harji Maan, Halka Incharge Former Union Ministers Som Parkash and Vijay Sampla also reached at Gaushala late night.

Officials, however, said a total of 48 cows were present in the Gaushala.

SP Bhatti said that police have started an investigation into the matter. The Hindu leaders demanded that miscreants should be booked and arrested soon.

SSP Toora told that on a complaint lodged by Gaushala Manager Satnam Singh, the police have registered a case against unknown miscreants. He said after scanning CCTVs, the cops are questioning suspicious persons.

SP Bhatti said that the bodies of 20 dead cows have been sent to Gadvasu University Ludhiana (PAU) for post-mortem examination while the remaining 28 ill cows are being treated by veterinary doctors in Phagwara. The picture could be cleared after getting the post-mortem report.

Meanwhile, a bandh was observed in Phagwara to protest the incident. The Hindu bodies alleged the cows' feed was poisoned and demanded the arrest of those behind the incident.
