Mumbai: The BSE Sensex on Monday dropped 1,254.68 points to 57,084.25 while the broader index, Nifty, slipped 341.90 points to 17,133.75, as the equity markets opened in red after a gap of four days.
Selling was seen across the board. The sensitive index registered the day's high and low at 57,420.80 and 57,051.75 points, respectively.
The Nifty registered a high of 17,237.75 and a low of 17,130.05.
The Mid Cap fell by 1.60 per cent and Small Cap by 1.39. In 30 scrips, five advanced while 25 declined.
The losers were Infosys by 7.03 per cent to Rs 1,625.65; Tech Mahindra by 5.19 per cent to Rs 1,337.20; HDFC by 3.62 per cent to Rs 2,291.45; HDFC Bank by 3.41 per cent to Rs 1,414.85 and Wipro by 3.06 per cent to Rs 542.20.
The gainers were NTPC by 4.45 per cent to Rs 160.75; Tata Steel by 2.39 per cent to Rs 1,350.75, M&M by 0.53 per cent to Rs 870.15 and Powergrid by 0.24 per cent to Rs 230. (UNI)
