Agartala: Two minor girls were driven out of their homes after physical assault by their parents for not agreeing to marry.

Both of them have been undergoing treatment in Bishalgarh Sub-divisional Hospital in Sepahijala district.

Tripura Child Rights Commission (TCRC) has registered a case against the parents and asked police to step up security of the girls and investigate the incident. Chairperson of the Commission, Jayanti Debbarma, visited the injured girls and recorded their statement.

“Drastic action will be taken against the accused people. We shall send a strong message to society so that such incidents shall not repeat,” Debbarma said. Expressing concern over the incident, he said the minor girls are also not safe in the hands of their parents.

According to police, Suresh Das of Ghaniamra village of Bishalgarh had recently fixed the arranged marriage of his two daughters, Geeta (14) and Sita (16), with much older youths of a nearby area. But both the girls, students of VIII and X, had refused to get married so soon.

Peeved with their refusal and obduracy, Suresh Das and his wife, keen to get rid of the daughters, beat them up severely, inflicting serious injuries. To save their lives, the girls fled to their maternal grandmother’s house, which is nearby, and fell sick.

With the help of neighbours, the old grandmother got the girls admitted to the hospital, where they are still under treatment for injuries and mental trauma.
