A day after the shoe-throwing incident in the Supreme Court, Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai expressed caution regarding social media and its impact on how statements are reported. The remarks came during a hearing related to the All India Judges’ Association, where CJI Gavai addressed a colleague for whispering his opinion instead of speaking openly.
CJI Gavai said, “My brother, Justice Vinod Chandran, wanted to say something, but in the age of social media, we don’t know how it will be reported. So I asked him to whisper it in my ear.”
Lawyer Throws Shoe
On Monday, 72-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishore attempted to throw a shoe at CJI Gavai. Security guards quickly intervened and stopped him. The CJI later stated that he was not affected by the attack and asked the lawyer to leave. Delhi Police also released Kishore after questioning him.
Reasons Behind the Incident
Kishore gave several reasons for his actions. He said he was hurt by CJI Gavai’s comments on a public interest litigation concerning a Lord Vishnu statue. He also disagreed with the CJI’s remarks regarding bulldozer actions, questioning what was wrong with demolishing properties using bulldozers.
Accused Refuses to Apologize
Kishore defended his actions, saying, “Although I am strongly against violence, think about why a non-violent, simple man, who has no group affiliation, had to do this. It’s a matter to reflect upon.” He added, “I am not uneducated; I am also a gold medalist. I was neither drunk nor under any influence. This was my reaction to his actions. Take it as you wish. I am neither afraid nor do I regret anything.”
