Kollam: A 23-year-old woman house surgeon was stabbed to death by a school teacher while he was being treated at the Kottarakkara Government taluk hospital on Wednesday, sources said.

The deceased is identified as Vandana Das of Kaduthuruthy in Kottayam, a final year MBBS student of Kollam Azeezia Institute of Medical Sciences & Research.

Sources said accused, S Sandeep (42), a teacher of Nedumbana UP School, stabbed the young house surgeon six times with a scissor leading to her tragic death at 4.30 am at the hospital. The incident happened when she was dressing his wounds on his leg.

He also attacked five more persons including home guard Alex Kutty and sub inspector Manilal and vandalised the hospital. He was brought to the hospital by the police after he suffered injuries on his leg following a quarrel with his neighbours.

There were reports that he was under treatment in a de-addiction centre for a few days recently. However, it is not clear what provoked him to attack the doctor.

Meanwhile, various associations of doctors including KGMOA began a state-wide flash strike demanding stern action against the culprit and seeking protection for doctors on duty in hospitals. The association also alleged that the culprit was not handcuffed while being treated. (UNI)
