Maharashtra: Nagpur central jail imparting nursing assistant training to inmates

Nagpur: Nagpur's Central Jail became the first incarceration centre that has started imparting nursing assistant training to its inmates, sources said on Wednesday.

This is for the first time that any prison in Maharashtra is trying to impart such type of training to its inmates.

This will not only help jail authorities to provide primary treatment at the in-house hospital but also attend to emergency situations in the barracks.

Moreover, after completing their term of sentence, the inmates can find jobs elsewhere related to the same field.

With this initiative, the authorities are trying to develop prisons as the correction and rehabilitation homes.

Many a times it becomes very difficult to provide first aid to the prisoners because of the rise in the number of inmates.

Non-availability of sufficient healthcare manpower inside the jail, has led to several inmates losing their lives.

Although health officers, laboratory technician are available for treatment, the staff is not enough to take care of the entire prison.

The authorities concerned have tied up with a private firm which has taken the responsibility of giving healthcare lessons to the inmates.

In the first batch, 40 prisoners have been selected and they will be given the training of nursing assistant.

The training will be of 18 weeks, i e roughly of four months, sources said.

After the training, the inmates would have to give the exams and the successful inmates will get the certificate for the same, the sources added. (UNI)
