Shillong: Armed Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) soldiers entered the Indian territory in Meghalaya and threatened villagers near the international border in South Garo Hills district before they were chased back by the villagers on Wednesday, an official said.

A Border Security Force official said they have lodged a protest with the BGB over the matter.

Two armed BGB soldiers intruded inside Rongara Imbloka (Waek) village on Wednesday afternoon apparently in search of smugglers who fled into Indian territory.

The alerted Indian villagers chased away the intruders, even as the two BGB soldiers threatened the villagers with their weapons.

However, the villagers were firmed and forced the BGB intruders to retreat from the Indian soil.

Later, the villagers informed the state police and BSF officials of the intrusion by the BGB men in full military uniform after which the BSF troopers swung into action.

District police chief of South Garo Hills, Abraham Marak said a police team was sent to the border village to take stock of the situation.

“We have already taken up the matter with the BGB. A commander-level meeting has been held and the matter was raised . We would soon have a flag meeting to further follow up the matter,” Inspector General of BSF (Meghalaya Frontier), Pradip Kumar said. (UNI)
