Hyderabad-Bengaluru bus catches fire in Andhra's Kurnool, 20 killed; door jammed, passengers jump from window (VIDEO)

A Hyderabad-bound private bus caught fire near Chinnatekur in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday after colliding with a two-wheeler, leaving 20 people dead. Several people jumped from the burning bus by breaking a window.

According to initial reports, the bus was heading to Bengaluru from Hyderabad and had 41 people on board. The motorcycle collided with bus and got dragged underneath with its fuel cap open, triggering the blaze.



Kurnool District Collector Dr A Siri says, "The accident occurred between 3 and 3:10 am when the bus collided with a bike, causing a fuel leak that led to the fire. Out of the 41 passengers, 21 have been rescued safely. Among the remaining 20, the bodies of 11 have been identified so far. Efforts are underway to identify the rest."



The bus door got jammed due to a short circuit and the vehicle was completely gutted within minutes. police said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the bus fire incident.

"Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000," Modi said in a post on X.
