Iceland's Minister for Children has stepped down after admitting that she had a child with a teenager more than 30 years ago.
In a media interview, Ásthildur Lóa Thórsdóttir said she had first started a relationship when the boy was 15 years old, and she was a 22-year-old counsellor at a religious group which he attended. She then gave birth to their child when she was 23, and the teenager, now a grown man, even paid child support for 18 years.
"It's been 36 years and a lot of things change in that time and I would definitely have dealt with these issues differently today than I had the skills and maturity to do when I was 22,” Thórsdóttir added.
Following the revelation, Thórsdóttir was summoned by Iceland’s Prime Minister, Kristrún Frostadóttir, and she subsequently resigned from her post.
Frostadóttir, addressed the matter as “serious,” adding that she knows “more than an average person.”
It's worth noting that Iceland's age of consent is 15, but sex with a minor under 18 is illegal if one is their teacher or mentor.
